Safe Zone Training

Safe zone training group

16 current faculty and staff members from across the campus have been trained as Safe Zone Facilitators, either during our initial ‘train-the-trainer’ training in October 2016 or our supplemental 'train-the-trainers' in January 2019 and 2022.  In these sessions, participants learned to develop and facilitate workshops on campus to increase awareness of LGBT+ communities. Safe Zone Training is here to increase awareness, engage participants in personal reflection, and encourage understanding of terminology.

The purpose of this training is to:

  • Create an awareness of personal ideas, stereotypes, and assumptions related to people who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, asexual, or with other marginalized genders or sexualities (LGBTIQA+).
  • Increase a comfort level in and respect for addressing concepts and language related to LGBTIQA+ identities.

As Father Scott Pilarz stated in 2008, "It is [Catholic] teaching that calls us to recognize that 'every person has an inherent dignity because he or she is created in God's image.'" To see the entire letter, please click here.

Since the 2016-2017 academic year, The University of Scranton has trained nearly 900 employees and students. To meet the trainers, click here
